I think Jose meant LKGC (Last Known Good Configuration). It's one of the
options available from the boot menu.

Thanks Tom; I should have been able to figure that out. LKGC succeeds,
Windows starts normally.
My comment above about not getting the BSOD following reset via the Task
Manager is wrong. I had inadvertently set automatic restart (long story).
