AGP 4x to AGP 8x

Allan

I have an ATI radeon 9800 pro and it supports up to 8x
AGP.
My motherboard only supports up to 4x. So, my question
is, if I was to get a motherboard with support up to
8xAGP would I have a smoother gameplay experience when I
play todays state of the art games?

Thanks.

From what I've read, no.

And P4 processors above 2.6 (800 FSB, dual mode memory) don't experience much of a gain.

So, I you have the ATI 9800 Pro, P4 2.6 800 FSB with 1gb DDR 3200 memory you got the best you can get with that card. Now, pop in
the new X800 and you will scream!

Just the AGP speed change won't make a huge change in the
way the 9800 Pro runs, but when you change the mobo you'll
probably also change the CPU, and other components. Taken
as a whole, the new system could be much faster than you
current system. You didn't say what you have now.

To add what Jim and Steve offered, doing so may benefit, but it is a matter
of real differences. but keep in mind whether your XP install is OEM. If it
came with the MOBO, then that XP install goes with it if you change it. If
you have a retail version, then no worries at all!

Right now I have P4 1.7 ghz, 512 DDR RAM, XP Pro, 40gb
harddrive @5200RPM.

Once I got my Radeon 9800 Pro I was just a little
disappointed as it wasn't running as I hoped. Any ideas
then?

For games you can speed things up by creating a special
gaming account and turning all unnecessary services off.
You may find that most games load into RAM and don't use the
hard drive, but a faster hard drive will speed things up, at
least the speed at which the game loads.
Depending on your present mobo, you could get a new CPU,
perhaps with a larger cache.

But some P4s may be running at 400 MHz on the FSB and a new
CPU might jump your mobo FSB to 533.

Get EVEREST from www.lavalys.com and see what your settings
are now.
Make sure you have the latest ATI drivers, and get your mobo
manual to see what tweaks can be applied. See
www.blackviper.com for service settings for gaming, what you
can turn off and what you should not.

You will see a gain if you get the 2.6 800 FSB setup.

But, as Tom said if you've got an OEM XP you will need to get a new copy. Buy it when you buy the hardware.

Go to zipzoomfly.com or newegg.com.

You need:

Mobo with 800 FSB (Asus P4P800 Deluxe) $115
P4 2.8E Prescott 800 FSB 1mb cache $175 (zipzoomfly - today)
PC3200 DDR 1gb kit - $179
7200 8mb buffer drive WD 80gb 8mb buffer $63
you may also need a new case.

So for $532 you can have a real nice system. I've built several just like this.

Then follow Jim's advice on setting up a game account.

Run your system through SYSmark2004, then check online for systems with the above specs to see the difference. But, be warned many
overclock, so watch those extreme high scores!

Oh, and buy a subscription to MaximumPC. Best mag out there!

That all depends if your system has a good cpu for the
games your wanting to see improvement during play!! if the
cpu you have is suitable add some ram to the new board and
you will see alot of difference!!! Ryan Rhodes
