AGP 8X support?

Hello. I am having a problem with XP's AGP support. My nVidia control panel
says that both my Video Card and my mobo support 8X AGP but my OS only
supports 2X. My brothers machine only supports 4X AGP but he gets almost
double the FPS in DOOM3. Does anyone have an idea on how to solve this
problem. I have already installed the newest Hyperion drivers and nVidia
drivers but niether helped. I'll list my system specs below in case it helps
someone come up with an answer. Thanks a million!

AMD Sempron 3000+ CPU
ASUStek A7V8X-LA mobo
VIA KM400(A) VT 8237 chipset
BFGTech 5500 OC 256 MB video card
Compaq FS7600 monitor

Have you disabled the onboard video in the bios settings ? Also check in
bios that the AGP is set to 8X.

My BIOS only has a AGP/Onboard setting and it does not have any options for
setting AGP"speed". I have read in other forums(mostly VIAArena) that this
is a Microsoft/VIA problem. Do you know if either of these companies has
addressed it or do you have any idea if there is a way I can resolve this
issue myself? Thanks again.

I guess I should also add that AGP/Onboard isn't AGP or Onboard it is AGP and
Onboard, the only other option is Disable. I have a pre-manufactured computer
(Compaq) with a user safe BIOS which makes it totally unconfigurable. But
anyways if anyone has a suggestion I would love to hear it as I am already
getting a bald spot from puling my hair out. Thanks again.

Try DirectX Diagnostic on your computer. Start>Run>type "dxdiag"> press
Enter. Check the Display tab.

Try updating DirectX from the Microsoft Web site:

In order to get the correct AGP drivers for your motherboard, you need to
install the correct AGP slot drivers. These are normally part of the
motherboard chipset drivers. Download and install the latest VIA 4 in 1
Hyperion drivers.

I have a 6800GT card on an Asus A8V mainboard (socket 939, AGP), running XP
Home.

The nVidia control panel also lists 2X for the OS on my system. I believe
that's normal, although I can't recall the explanation.

My performance (3DMark03, 3DMark05, Doom timedemo, etc.) appears to match
what I've seen published for the CPU/GPU combination.

What's your brother's graphics card? That may be more important than whether
his mainboard supports AGP 8X.

I suggest that you try one of the Futuremark 3DMark benchmarks. Their online
database provides a basis for comparison, although you might do well to
ignore some of the higher numbers. (Some people treat benchmarking as a
sport, and I suspect that some will cheat to "win".)

(It looks like the Sempron ought to be good for Doom3, but that an nVidia

Thanks Bob. You seem to have been the only help I have recieved so far , seems everyone else assumes I'm a total idiot. My bro is running a ATI radeon 9550 All-in-Wonder. I'll be sure to check out those web sites you mentioned. I certaintly hope that 10 FPS on med in DOOM3 is not all I am capable of.

hi there

just wondering if you resolved this issue as I have exactly the same problem
with my system!

I'm running XP Home Edition SP1.
ASUS P4p800 mobo (which doesn't allow you to set the AGP rate, but is
capable of 8x AGP)

check the BIOS should be under Advance setting might say Flexible AGP or
just AGP
