Again, changing permissions to the repository folders

Huang Sheng-Chi

Sorry to bring this old issue up again, but I still cannot
do this. W2K (Japanese) allowed me to easily import MUI
components. WXP Pro on my laptop without a network
connected (nor without network settings) allowed me to do
the same. WXP Pro (SP1 with network settings) on my
desktop still does not allow me to import MUI files, with
the error:

I checked the previous postings, and many said to "Clear
the "Read Only" attribute under the General tab, and to
all the subfolders." But everytime after I cleared it,
the attribute becomes True again.

Question 1: Is there a "service" setting in WXP Pro that
keeps setting the attribute to "Read Only"? How can I
turn this OFF in Windows XP Professional?

Also, many people stated that: Please set your repository
root share/security settings so that you and anyone else
who needs to import MUI SLDs have "full control" access to
the repository root.

Question 2: I am already the administrator for my
computer. The setting is as follows: Control Panel ->
User Accounts -> Account Type -> Computer Administrator.
Are there other settings that one must do in Windows XP
Professional to set the "full control" so that I can have
FULL access to this folder?

Thank you.

Hi Huang,

An1: No there is not.
Question 1, how do you know that your folders are Read-Only ? If you see
full square in attribute you mention then this does not mean that they are
Read-Only.

Also: Go to security tab: Advanced option.
In Advanced Security Settings set or add full permissions to your account or
group. and also check Replace permissions entries on all child objects ....
This should be enough.

An2:
Administrator has the rights to take ownership, and many other powerful
operation.
But he can prevent himself from accessing anything. But he can almost always
change it back.
You need to protect some things even from yourself (if you are Admin).

Slobodan

Looks like this is a design by Windows, as stated below
from "Ramesh" (cannot turn off the "read only" attribute).

Very strangely after *kicking* the folder for a while
(resetting the "read only" attribute a few times, renaming
the folder "Windows Embedded Data" so that sharing is not
possible, turning off the SQL server, starting database
manager without sql server nor shared folder, set the
folder to share again, restarting the PC), now it seems
possible to install MUI components (or at least for the
Asian MUI components in CD#3).

Is this a bug? Can someone at MS check the following:

1. Install a fresh WXP Professional
2. Install Service Pack 1a (maybe this is the cause?)
3. Install Windows XP Embedded SP1 tools
4. Install MUI components (installing all the Asian
components with the "Copy respository files to repository
root" checked

Queston: How about others using WXP Professional as their
development environment? Or am I the only one with this
problem :(

Gill,

The Read-only and System attributes is only used by
Windows Explorer to
determine whether the folder is a special folder, such as
a system folder
that has its view customized by Windows (for example, My
Documents,
Favorites, Fonts, Downloaded Program Files), or a folder
that you customized
by using the Customize tab of the folder's Properties
dialog box. As a
result, Windows Explorer does not allow you to view or
change the Read-only
or System attributes of folders.

1. If you do not want the customizations, try this:
Workaround, use Attrib command:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=326549
NOTE: If you remove the Read-only or System attribute from
a folder, it may
appear as a ordinary folder and some customizations may be
lost.

2. If you want the customizations, but still able to write
to the folder,
try this:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=256614
[ Windows Explorer uses the Read-Only attribute to
determine whether or not
the folder is customized. To work around this behavior,
you can configure
Windows Explorer to use the System flag instead of the
Read-Only flag ]

Hi Slobodan,
Thanks for the reply.
Question 1, how do you know that your folders are Read- Only ? If you see
full square in attribute you mention then this does not mean that they are
Read-Only.

Of course, the sub-folders and files within this folder
might have the "read-only" attribute set. However if one
uncheck this "full square" marked "Read Only", then one
can unset all the "Read Only" attributes for all the sub-
folders and files within this folder (did that many times,
since Visual Source Safe likes to set all files to "Read
Only", but I am not going to get into that now).
Also: Go to security tab: Advanced option.

Question: I don't see this tab in Windows XP
Professional. I see this tab in Windows 2000. When I
right click the folder "Windows Embedded Data", I only get
the following tabs in Windows XP Professional: General,
Sharing, Customize. Perhaps this setting is moved to
another location in Windows XP Professional?
An2:
Administrator has the rights to take ownership, and many other powerful
operation.
But he can prevent himself from accessing anything. But he can almost always
change it back.
You need to protect some things even from yourself (if
you are Admin).

That makes sense. It's nice to be safe, but it's hard to
customize the OS/application then :(

Again, thanks for your reply!

BTW: finally got my data base manager to install the 8 MUI
components that came with WXPe SP1. Still don't know why
it worked tough :(

I wanted to say that you should see full square, it means that it is not
know state or it can't be changed.

You need to make changes in properties that you don't see.
Go to folder options tab View and uncheck Use simple file sharing.

Hi Slobodan,
Thanks for the info! You are right, once unchecking
the "Use Simple File Sharing", I can set the permission
for which users to share the repository folder.

Again, thanks for the help!
