After upgrade to SP2, PC can't be found by others

Since upgrading to SP2, my PC can't be found by the
other PCs on my local network.

If I do a ping against the PC with SP2, it will just
time out. If I do a "find computer", it will come
back not found.

Because that PC can't be found by my other PCs, I
can't link to any of its shared folders, and I really
need to be able to do that.

Let me note that on the PC with SP2, I can successfully
ping itself. I don't know if that means anything, but
I thought I would mention it.

Is there some new option in SP2 which I need to enable
to allow the PC to be seen, once again, by the local
network???

PPS: I can't ping the PC with SP2, from other computers,
even when using its IP address.

PPPS: Removing SP2 solves the problem. I can ping, and
link its shared folders, again. HOWEVER, does this mean
I can never, ever, upgrade to SP2?

Walt,

please have a look at http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm.

Wow, great list. Thanks for the reference!

In reading through this, does this mean that the
firewall in SP2 is still active even after it is
disabled?

Like I said, I have completely disabled the
Win XP SP2 built-in firewall. However, after reading
through the problem list, it seems that what I am
seeing "fits" being caused by settings of the
firewall.

Is this at all possible???

Go back into security center and push the recommendations button on the
firewall. On the next screen select the checkbox that says that you have
your own firewall and will monitor it your self. This fixed all my problems
and also got the disabled firewall icon out of the tray.

Walt,

no. You only get a warning from the Security Center that your
firewall is deactivated. You can get rid of that warning through
the Recommendations button in the Security Center, but, unless
you really have another firewall running, that's not a good
idea.

Not as far as I know. I don't know everything, of course, but
most people even have the firewall activated and can still use
their local network.

Perhaps you want to have a look at
