after KB834707 MS04-038 install IE no longer loads web pages

I installed SP2 and MS04-038 within minutes of each other, since I got an
update notification for MS04-038 almost immediately after installing SP2.

I don't remember if I used IE after updating to SP2 but before MS04-038. If
I had I would have noticed if it was not working. So either it was working or
I didn't use it.

I will try uninstalling MS04-038 and then SP2 and see what happens.

I've finally downloaded all the software I need to find/fix/prevent spyware
and will install it on the offending system tonight. Thanks for your help.
I'll let you know what I find.

I checked and innoculated my system against spyware, adding the recommened
host file, running spybot, hijackThis and Spywareblaster.

Spybot identified and removed the following:
(1) Avenue A, Inc.
(5) DSO Exploit

I don't know what this stuff was but after that IE still did not work.
Everything HijackThis identified was known to me as legit software or
changes to IE so I think my system was clean.

So I went ahead and uninstalled MS04-038 and then SP2. That fixed the
problem and IE worked again.

After that I updated to SP2 again, but this time instead of using my SP2 CD,
I used the MS Windows software update website. I noticed that it added
several patches before SP2, which was different from what the CD did. I was
not able to test the system (it was late), but will do so tonight and let you
know if this finally fixes the problem (fingers crossed).

After installing SP2 from the web my system had the same problem again, so it
looks like it is not related to MS04-038.

Mebbe the CD was befouled? Uninstall SP2 again and install it via Windows
Update download.

But first, check for driver and BIOS updates from the computer mfr's
website.

Neither SP2 on the web nor on my CD worked. I finally just completely
reinstalled XP, and then updated to SP2 via the web. This worked and I'm
answering this message on my formerly troubled system, so finally it is fixed!

I did notice something odd along the way. This system only has a 6Gb hard
disk so I turned on disk compression after installing SP2 and MS04-038.
During the compression process Windows reported a "Windows File Protection"
error and asked me to insert the original XP CD. I canceled the dialog. It
could be that last time I compressed the disk, the XP CD was already in the
CD-ROM drive. If this was the case I don't know if it would have replaced the
file. Maybe that was the problem. I don't know.

Thanks for your help.

Spybot Finds DSO Exploit
If all your critical updates are installed you are protected against DSO
Exploit and the finding in Spybot is just a nuisance. Eliminate this by
doing the following:

· Open Spybot and select 'advanced' mode.

· Select 'settings' in the left column.

· Select 'ignore product' in the left column.

· Select 'security' tab.

· Place check mark in box beside DSO Exploit.

· Close program

· Open Spybot and run a scan.

You will find that DSO Exploit has been eliminated and if your computer does
not harbor any other spyware you will see a congratulatory message.
