After installing WMDC...

I have a new laptop w/Vista. I use windows mail for sending and receiving
emails. However, I understand that I will need to install outlook 2003 or
newer in order to sync my pda device (that uses Activesync) to my outlook
calendar, events, task and contacts.

I have windows xp 2003 software, and when I prepare to install in on my
laptop it doesn't specifically ask if I want to install ms outlook. I'm
afraid that if I install the entire software program then it will mess up
(interfere w/vista) and cause my system to crash. Please tell me if it's
safe to download the entire software program on my laptop (which uses the new
vista home and student ed?) Thnx.

I couldn't get what you mean by "Windows XP 2003" . What is this ? And why do
you want to install Windows XP in order to get MS Office Outlook ? These have
nothing to do with each other.

You can install the entire Office 2003 suite of software, and it
will run just fine under Vista. The installer at some point will
offer you a choice of which Office programs to install, so
you can install just Outlook.

absolutely not ! If your computer has come with MS Word 2007 pre-installed,
then it means that you already have the latest (and the BEST) version of MS
Word. So there's no need to re-install Word.
One more point, you said that you want to install Outlook only because you'd
like to sync your PDA with your laptop, right ? If this is the case, you
should note that if your PDA comes with a software CD (as most PDAs have an
installation CD), you should note that your PDA installation CD must have a
version of MS Office Outlook - or at least most of them have.
For example, I am in UK and my PDA is SPV M3100. The network from which I
bought the mobile contract for this PDA is Orange. And Orange has included in
its package an installation CD for my PDA which includes: Windows Mobile 5. ,
Microsoft ActiveSync, and MS Outlook 2002 (which is not the latest version of
Outlook and I don't need it for I have Outlook 2007, but it perfectly does
the job for synchronization anyway).
If I can be of any more help , please feel free to ask. Good luck.

Well , here's the root of the enigma ! I don't think there is any Windows XP
Home Ed that "includes" MS Office 2003. Windows XP is an "Operating System"
whereas MS Office is a productivity software by Microsoft (a very expensive
software indeed).

So I am surprised to hear that you own a CD which contains both Windows XP
Home Ed. and MS Office 2003 ! But anyway, my advice is that you do NOT
install Windows XP on your computer which is already running on Vista. Try to
find a CD of MS Office (either Office 2003 or the latest version which is
Office 2007). When you insert the original MS Office, depending on the
version of the your MS Office (e.g. Basic, Professional, Ultimate ...etc.) ,
it gives you the option to choose which of the programs of MS Office you want
to install (normally MS Office major programs are: Access, Excel, Word, ...
and Outlook). Then you can tick only Outlook (but my advice is that you also
install MS Word - which is a "must" for any computer).
good luck

Okay...I'm not an expert with computer terminology and such however, all I
know is that when I insert the disc into my drive it ask for permission to
download MS Windows XP Home Ed which has MS Office 2003, in which I only need
Outlook to download and not all the other programs (stuff). I apologize if
I'm sounding somewhat confusing.....

Yes, you will have to install Outlook 2003 to be able to sync with your PDA
but then, be certain that it will work with Vista.

Windows XP
Windows Server 2003
Windows Vista

are the current operating systems available.

Windows XP Home (Operating System) does *not* include Microsoft Office
(and/or Outlook).
You cannot install Windows XP Home (or any part thereof) in Vista.
You need to use Microsoft Office install cd(s), choose Custom Install, and
pick just Outlook, if that is all you want.
