After formatting hard drive, sound drivers cannot be found. XP + S

I formatted my C: drive to try and resolve some issues (it didn't) but now,
after putting back all my files on to the newly formatted computer, I cannot
play any sounds at all. Not sure where to download things from. My speakers
are from my Dad's Advent computer, but sound doesn't work even through the
monitor's small speakers.

Can anyone point me in the direction of something to download to make the
sound work?

If all you have done is format and install you need mobo chipset and other
hw drivers
These are sourced from either PC manu if OEM manu like Dell / Sony, or
Laptop manu, or the specific hw manu for mobo, video card etc.
Do NOT use winupdate for drivers

thank you, but this may sound stupid, but how do i find out what kind of
sound card I have?

Also, some cmos/bios have a specific option for enabling the sound. check it
out as well. But sometimes the easiest thing to do is to uninstall the sound
card, run windows a few times to ensure no evidence of the card exists. Then
reinstall the card so that windows can automatically install it or you can
install the drivers for it..... When it is installed successfully you should
see 1 or 2 icons in the task bar - one being a little speaker that helps
control the volume and mute.....

again, thanks for the help, but how do i uninstall and reinstall? i'm not
really sure what i'm looking for

Hi Will,
To uninstall the Driver or the sound card, do the following:
-Click Start >> Control Panel in there click Add/Remove Hardware option.
Select the Sound Hardware and uninstall/Remove.
Then Reboot.
-Another option Right Click My Computer and select properties and on
Properties window click on Hardware, click Device Manager and Click on the
Sound Card and you will see what sound card you have Write down the specs of
your sound cards and Search for the latest driver from the Manufacturer for
your sound card version download and install it and Reboot hopefully this
will solve the issue.
Hope this helps
Regards
nass

There are many free programs on the web that will tell you
almost everything, hardware and programs, installed in a
computer. The one I use most is Belarc Advisor
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html. Once installed it
will tell you most of your hardware's information.

Another source of information for your computer is the
instruction manual and/or packing list that came with the
computer. The manufacturer's web site also may have a
feature that allows you to type in the model of the computer
(Sony, Dell, etc. website) or serial number and it will tell
you everything you need to know about your computer and
allow you to download the latest drivers.

Please take the following with the educational intent it is
meant with. There are many posts here to help you, but one
that you posted concerns me. You stated "i'm not really
sure what i'm looking for" Dumping an operating system and
reinstalling without knowing what you are doing, or at least
having a close help system available, should not be
undertaken. The original problem, which you state has not
been solved, probably could have been fixed without dumping
and reformatting the system. XP is probably the most stable
OS Microsoft has put out and it is really hard to screw it
up to the point where a total reinstall is required. Most
problems can be fixed with at the most a repair install of
the OS.

Good luck in getting all the drivers for your system. They
should have come on CDs with your system or in a hidden
partition on the hard drive.

Look at the backside of your pc. If you have 2 sets of speaker/mic jacks,
then you have a sound card. Check it out, let us know....
