After attempting a Windows 2000 install, the hard drive isn't detected.

While installing Windows 2000 from a cd on a Compaq
Deskpro Pentium 2 400 mhz, and the computer restarts, and
the computer displays a message that "NTLDR is missing".
When I restart from a Windows 98 disk, and run FDISK, the
message "No fixed disks present" appears. I have tried 7
hard drives by either installing Windows 98 and trying to
upgrade to Windows 2000 or installing via FAT32 or NTFS. I
can format the hard drive when installing Windows 2000,
but Windows 98 FDISK doesn't detect that it is there.

You didn't mention the drive controller (possibly SCSI, ultra DMA, raid, or
ATA100), but you may need to boot the Windows 2000 setup disks or CD-Rom and
*F6* very early and very important (at setup is inspecting your system) in
the setup to prevent drive controller detection, and select S to specify
additional drivers. Then later you'll be prompted to insert the manufacturer
supplied Windows 2000 driver for your drive's controller in drive "A"

If you wait and then S to specify additional drivers, then it may be too
late as Windows 2000 Setup at this point may have already assigned the
resources your drive's controller is wanting to use.

The drives I have tried are IDE. Mostly they are 4.3 gb
or larger.

Actually it's the controller you need to be concerned with. Also check the
jumper placements against your documentation.
