difficulty with a video monitor

A Compaq Deskpro with Windows 2000 works well at power on. Windows shows
it's Hello screen then the disk check software and then the signon message.
From there the normal screen, my computer, etc, comes on partially but mostly
garbage. Apparantly Windows 2000 switches to a different video driver or a
different variation of the previous one.
Anyone know how to restrict window's use to the initial driver?

Thanks Ben - I'll give that a try.

Start the computer in "Enable VGA Mode" by tapping the F8 key during bootup,
then right-click a blank area on the desktop, select "Properties",
"Settings"
and see if you can lower the screen resolution setting. If this doesn't
help,
try reinstalling the drivers for your display adapter.
