Aero Glass Crash with Perf Rating 4.0 in RC1

Hi,

I am currently running Vista RC1, however, whenever I try to turn on Aero
Glass with Transparency and Desktop Composition, I get a total unrecoverable
system freeze.

Perforamance Analysis says my system rating is 4.0, with 5.9 for Aero, so I
don't understand why this always occurs.

I have updated to the nVIDIA Vista drivers, however the problem still
persists with either Microsoft or nVIDIA drivers installed.

My GPU is an nVIDIA 256MB 6800GT AGP
My CPU is an AMD Athlon 64 3200+
I have 1 GB RAM.

I tried to use Beta 2 and encountered the same problem and thought that this
would be rectified in RC1.

Any thoughts?

Thanks, Ben

Are running the 32-bit or the 64-bit version of Vista? Did you try
turning on Aero with just the default MS video drivers installed?

I am currently running 32Bit... I tried with the default MS drivers first and
was encountering the issue, so I decided to try the nVIDIA Vista drivers to
see if that would rectify the issue.

When Transparency and Composition is off, all seems stable.

I am running x86 beta2 with nVidia drivers and have no problems with Aero.
Did you do a clean install or upgrade from another system.

Yeh clean install

Vista says my Aero Experience Rating is 5.9 and 5.0 for 3D

Is this a new computer or new video card? Did you remember to plug in the
secondary power cable to the video card (if it has one)? Have you played
any 3d intensive games with it under XP?

I have sort of the same problem, I have a ASUS P4S800d-E Deluxe MB with a
GeoForce 6200 128AGP video card, the
system locks up when running RC1 default agp system drivers whenever Aero is
selected. The thing is, Media Center
and Media Player both work with the default drivers but not Aero, when I
load the SIS agp drivers that came with my
MB I get green screens with both Media Center and Media Player but the
system is solid with Aero. So my situation
is I can have Aero or Media Center/Player but not both. This was the same
with Beta 2, Pre-RC1 I could never get
stable.

Just to add I am talking about the system agp drivers not the video card
drivers (it never made a difference between Nvida or MS drivers).

I am using the same hardware configuration I had with XP, which ran fine. The
power adaptor is plugged into the video card. All 3D Gaming worked fine under
XP. It seems to occur when Aero goes to display a dialog box or open a window
using the 3D composition (when the windows "flip" open) on the desktop.
Currently the nVIDIA drivers won't let me decrease hardware acceleration to
test different settings.
