Hello, I get the impression that vista aero & flip are basically a waste of
time & processor power. Does anyone disagree, and how much difference does
turning it off make ?

Why don't you try it and see?

Hi,

It's a visual thing. You either like it or you don't. As with any advanced
visual features (like when 3D first was employed), it has an impact on
system resources. In Vista, this is fairly mitigated by the usage of gpu and
dedicated video memory on the video card itself rather than use of the
system's main memory. On a properly designed system, the effect on system
resources is minimal. On low spec hardware, it's very noticable and can
severely hamper the user experience. Personally, I like the aero features,
but it's a matter of preference, not of necessity.

I agree with flip but not with aero. Aero style is very nice (though not a
functional plus). 3D Flip is (in my opinion) nonsense.

KK, If you like just some features of the Aero // 3D Flip you can
customize it pretty throughly by using the following steps:

1. Click on the Start Pearl
2. Right click on computer, choose 'Properties'.
3. Click on 'Advanced System Settings' in the task pane on the right
hand side.
4. Click on the 'Settings' button under the performance section.
5. On this page, you can uncheckmark/checkmark certain features of
Windows Vista Aero.

So you could have say transitioning menus but not tooltips for
example. This way you might be able to get the nice looking features
you enjoy while removing the ones you feel are unjustifiably using up
your system resources.

6. Hit 'Apply'. Note: This may take a few minutes to apply
7. Hit 'Ok'.

it may be about being more "pretty" (it depends on tastes obviously) but as
other things in this new os its a but underrated by people

making the gpu draw the things can & means a bit better stability against
display driver failures, i wont go on technical issues right now, but sure
more people than me can talk about the message "the display adapter has
stopped responding and was successfully restarted" or something alike, in xp
or turning off the desktop composition that would mean bluescreen, and sure
it was a pleasure see those messages in early days when nvidia drivers were
breaking once a day!!

as currently there is no way to turn on the destop composition without
turning on aero (i dont know any at least), i dont consider it a waste of
processor power, not that it slow your computer use, despite some tests you
may find out there, using the gpu frees the processor for other things,
still you wont get much better computer speed, but you wont lose it
either... there are some programs, almost all midly-old drawing-intensive
ones, that have some problems when redrawing due to some internal changes
(most test i've seen about aero being slow used one at least), i can name
you photoshop cs, corel 9, autocad several versions, and etcetera... newer
versions of those programs built for vista may not have those problems (or i
would fire the programmers for being too lazy, lol!!), if you dont believe
those "big" programs can have problems just do a test yourself and be
amazed, not to blame them obviously cause vista were not there at the time
of creating them :-)

about flip3d, well yes, it is there if you want to use it, if you dont want,
you dont need to call it, obviously if you dont use it, it wont use
processor or slow you in any way :-)

I'm sure many people disagree. Personally I use aero, but never flip.
I know others who think flip is great.

I don't think anyone else's opinions about matters like this mean
anything. *You* should decide for yourself whether you like the
features enough to use them. You apparently don't like them, so don't
use them.

and how much difference does
turning it off make ?

That depends entirely on your hardware configuration. On a
powerful-enough machine, you probably wouldn't be able to see any
performance difference either way.
