I decided that as I've been a good boy recently, I thought I would treat myself to a new toy for 2007 :D

After doing alot of research (and advice from friends over at XtremeSystems - thanks guys :thumb: ) I have eventually settled for the following rig which should be capable of some pretty awesome OC'ing by all accounts:

Processor: Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 Quad Core
CPU Cooler: Tuniq Tower 120
Motherboard: Asus P5B-E Plus
RAM: CellShock 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C4 800MHz Dual Channel Kit
Graphics: Connect3D ATI Radeon X1950 XT-X SILENT Heatpipe 512MB GDDR4 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI
Graphics Cooler: Artic Cooling Accelero X2 Cooler (X1800/X1900 Series)
HDD1: Western Digital Raptor 74GB WD740ADFD 10,000RPM SATA 16MB Cache
HDD2: Western Digital Raptor 74GB WD740ADFD 10,000RPM SATA 16MB Cache
Floppy: Sony Floppy Drive (Silver)
DVD1: Sony DDU-1615 DVD-ROM (Silver)
DVD2: NEC AD7170A 18x18 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter (Silver)
Case: Antec P180 Advanced Super Midi Tower Case - No PSU (Silver)
PSU: OCZ GameXStream 700w Silent SLI Ready ATX2 Power Supply

I have all the other bits (OS/Monitor etc)

Grand Total: £1734.89

As I don't do alot of gaming, I have stuck with a mid-range graphics card which can also do GPU cancer crunching at Folding@Home.

All ordered last night from overclockers, apart from the CPU which is from Ebuyer, and due to arrive next Thursday :thumb:

Yes, I know I have more money than sense - but its going to be alot of fun and should crunch like crazy :D

See Ady they are queuing up for your old pc parts before you have stopped using them, but not me;)
Looks a mighty fine pc you are building:thumb:

Now a nice big hard drive would be nice if you have a sale!

Yep - RAID is on the cards :thumb:

The CellShock was a new one on me too - German make recommended by those at XtremeSystems as it has the superior Micron D9 IC's which OC far better - other than Crucial most others (including Corsair quite recently) use cheaper Promos IC's except on their very high speed RAM such as PC2-8500/8888/9200 etc, which are therefore very expensive.

Why are you going for that GPU and not the 8800GTX?
Firstly I don't game much, won't be going over to Vista anytime soon, the 8800's can't be used for folding, and they are very expensive :thumb:

Built at last....

Looks like I need to tidy the cables up a bit :D

The Tuniq Tower cooler is huge - good job I picked a big case!!

Only took 35 minutes to instal windows from scratch including all updates - made a new slipstreamed disc from my XP SP2 disc and added all latest updates and also the sata/raid drivers so I didn't have to use the F6 facility

Now I need to look at seeing how far this beast will OC :D

Looking great

So what temp does the CPU run at when crunching?

And does it crunch 4 units simultaneously?

Its crunching 4 units at a time as we speak, and the CPU temp according to Asus Probe and also Speedfan is only 29C (I assume they are using the same sensor) - not sure how accurate they are but it seems the cooler is doing its stuff, and its only at half fanspeed

As regards OC'ing - stock is 2.66GHz, will be looking to get something nice and stable around 3.4GHz I suspect.

Edit: .....just realised, at 1.5hrs per unit - it can crunch 64 in a day

It is surprisingly quiet, it has one of those 'silent fan' jobbies - also comes with a panel fan control so you can adjust it manually.

The Antec P180 case helps too - it has alot of sound dampening :thumb:
