I can no longer capture video while in "edit/play" mode...the movie maker
doesn't detect my video camera in edit/play mode....movie maker does, however,
recognize my video camera while in "camera-tape" mode. This just started -
i used to be able to capture video while in edit/play mode.
Advice greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hello,
Thank you for the reply. I'm not finding my problem there. I have done
nothing differently to capture video than I've been doing for months...i hook
up with same cable, camera, everything...i only get the "ping" though, now,
when the camera is in "camera-tape" mode (which is to record video) and then
it "disconnects" when I turn the camera to "play-edit" mode (which is from
where i would play my video for the moviemaker program to capture.) i've done
nothing differently, am using same equipment, the program just stopped
allowing me to capture video while in the "edit-play" mode of tthe camera
(sony handycam). thank you for any advice you can offer.

when i opend device manager, i don't see IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers
entry. I don't think i ever had that and it's always worked before - but if i
need that now what are the next steps? thank you!

My sony video device is "enabled" so that's fine.
I updated on wizard and it's fine...says i already have best software for
the device.
The wmm recognizes my camera in "camera" mode - just not in "Play/edit"
which is how i've always captured the video before. If I'm in camera mode,
WMM will "capture" (although there is nothing to capture)...As soon as I
switch to "play/edit" - the system "pings" and a box comes up stating we're
disconnected.

ok - trying again:
1. using sony handycam
2. dvc tapes
3. have been able to capture video for months
4. suddenly wmm doesn't recognize play/edit mode (which is what i was in
before to capture and suddenly wmm box appears: "video capture device not
detected. verify that device is turned on and connected properly, then try
again.
5. of course it is connected and turned on - its WMM that suddenly stopped
recognized my device in play/edit mode.
6. WMM DOES, however, recognize my device in "camera" (or 'record' mode)
which, of course doesn't help = i need it to recognize in play/edit mode.
7. I have uninstalled/reinstalled hardware device.
8. I have gone back to manual and followed all instructions to A) connect
the camcorder to the computer; B) using USB cable supplied; 3) set USB stream
in menu setting;
The problem is Wmm has suddenly stopped recognized my "sony digital imaging
device" in play/edit mode.
I've gone through all the troubleshooting steps in my manual.
I'm sure WMM is not the only program out there. Is there another program I
should try?
Can anyone explain why the system recognizes my camera in camera/tape mode
but not edit/play mode? (this suggests to me it is not the usb wire/port but
something weird with the program suddenly not recognizing what it did just a
few weeks ago.)
Thank you.

Have you made any changes to your pc since it last worked? Added any
programmes, hardware, updates, codecs, anything at all. Also, have you
removed anything.
Something must have changed, as MM won't just stop working on it's own.

Use system restore to go back to the point when it did last work.

Cams can often be used as web cams via usb and this will need to be in rec
mode. Have you tried doing this with it?

You should have had some software with the cam, try using this.

Hi - thank you for sticking with this!
No, i have not made changes. I did a system restore (with the Dell
technician on the line) back to 1 October 2006.
I know it doesn't make sense...one thing that is different is that I don't
get the "balloon" stating it is safe to remove hardware that i typically got
before (and then i'd hit "stop" program and then was told it was safe to
remove hardware).
I have not tried the webcam aspect in rec mode...how do i do that to capture
the video already recorded?
I used the software but it does the same thing (doesn't recognize the camera
in edit/play mode - only recognizes it in camera/record mode) : (
thank you for your help if you have other ideas.

Hi Graham + Newcomer,
I have just found this thread thru googling the exact same problem. My
symtoms are identical except that I have never been able to capture
video previously. Tonight I installed the correct driver from the Sony
website but still WMM won't detect my Sony HC30E. It is so
frustrating.
On another PC running Win2000, but no WMM ... the camera is picked up
as hardware so I know there's nothing wrong with the cable... This is
so frustrating anyone out there that knows what to do with this ..?

Hi all,
An update on my problem...... I gave up on USB in disgust, went out an
installed a firewire pci card today and from then on everything else
went fine, the camcorder talks to the PC with no problems ...so I will
never know what was wrong with the USB option..if you have the same
problem - do consider the firewire card option - these days it is quite
cheap and easy to install if you have winxp (or even win 2000).
