When I click on Start, then Search, the Search Results window opens as
follows, from TOP to BOTTOM:
File Edit View Favorites Tools Help
Search with an x button to close the left pain.
A New button and a Book (help file) button.
"Search for Files and Folders"
A Search for files or folders box (Type the file name here).
Containing text: (Type words contained in the file).
Look in: (a drop down box with my computers directories).
A Search Now button, and Stop Search Button.
Search Options << and below this line are
Date
Type
Size
Advanced Options
etc.

I tell you all this because my other computer has a completely different
looking search window pain, with an animated dog at the bottom.

First, I want to know how to make my search options show the "dog" search
pain, and vice versa.
Second, I want to save my Search Options to include a check mark in the
"Advanced Options" box.

Can someone please explain how these things are done?

Thanks for your help,
Bernie

You can help us with the answers to the following.

Do you have SP1 or SP2.
When you click start/search do you get the "search companion"?
Is the last option "change preferences"?
When you click "change preferences" does the first option refer to the
"animated character"?

Second, I want to save my Search Options to include a check mark in the
"Advanced Options" box.

I use searchadvancedoptions.vbs all the time, I would be lost with out it.
I also use Classic Search. I have a shortcut to searchadvancedoptions.vbs
on my Start Menu called ADVANCED SEARCH. I hardly ever use the regular
Search. I always forget to set the Advanced options.

Go here...
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_s.htm

Scroll down to (or do a Ctrl + F) to...
Search - Advanced Options (Set as Default)

Read the instructions.

If Windows is on the C drive...

Download searchadvancedoptions.vbs here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/searchadvancedoptions.vbs

Place searchadvancedoptions.vbs in C:\WINDOWS

Create a shortcut to C:\WINDOWS\searchadvancedoptions.vbs (I have mine on my
Start Menu) %allusersprofile%Start Menu\ADVANCED SEARCH
or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\ADVANCED SEARCH

Download and double click: searchstartmenu.reg
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/searchstartmenu.reg

Download and double click: searchactive.reg
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/searchactive.reg

Thanks very much to Kelly (MS-MVP).

I screwed up and sent this directly to Dennis by mistake. Here it is again
for the Group...

Thanks for your reply Dennis!

I have SP2.
When I click Start/search, I do NOT get the "search companion".
There is no option "change preferences".
I therefore cannot click on "change preferences".

I hope this helps you to help me.

Thanks for the reply Wesley!
Before doing what you have suggested, I should tell you that I do not have a
"WINDOWS" directory on my computer. I have a WINNT directory. Is that what
you/Kelly meant, or do you mean for me to create a directory C:\WINDOWS ?

Thanks,
Bernie

You should go to "search companion" when clicking "search". If you do "help"
on "search" it refers to "search companion". Very strange. I can't help.
Something has altered the default search.

They meant the system directory which is usually C:\Windows OR C:\Winnt.
You would be dealing with Winnt.
