desktop search, "as i type" stopped working

in windows desktop search, I'm experiencing an issue with "Enable Search As
I Type". The option is no longer working. When I insert my cursor in the
Desktop search bar, a little toolbar appears above the search field with
options for "Search Desktop" and "Search Web". I have to click the Search
Desktop button to activate the search. When I first installed the tool a
popup pane would appear as I typed my search, but this is no longer
happening .

any ideas what the problem could be?

i believe that i figured out the problem myself. after uninstalling and
reinstalling desktop search, i noticed that the "little tool bar" that i
referred to was the same as the bottom of the "as you type" pop up pane. i
am guessing that something screwed up the the pane, pushing the "toolbar"
to the top. perhaps, if i had pulled the tool bar down, the pane would have
reappeared.
