Advance Audio setting dissappeared.

use my computer for mixing sound bytes for fun and profit (actually
there's not a lot of profit yet but my day will come.)

I've been able to get to the screen to adjust the microphone volume up until
about an hour ago while in the middle of a recording session. Suddenly when
I click on the volume icon in the tray nothing happens. The screen does not
come up and stays in the bar.

I have restarted twice (and I've even done a complete shut down) and I've
even gone in thru the Control Panel, but nothing seems to correct the
situation.

Any suggestions?

So you go to "Control Panel" -> "Sounds and Audio Devices" -> under the
volume tab, click on "Advance" button thats on the "Device volume" pane and
the window wont open?

That's right.

Here's what I'm getting.....so far. (this includes all steps I've taken so
far.)

If I click on the volume control in the task bar (far right corner near the
clock) all I get is the VOLUME thingy in the bar below (it acts like it's in
minimized mode, so I tried to RESTORE from there by right clicking and NO
GOOD)

It was suggested by a friend to remove and re-install the drivers to the
sound card, but every time I try that I get an error. Heck, I've even gotten
updated drivers and tried to put those in to no success.

Here's what I'm going to do next.....

I'm going to boot up in safe mode and try to remove the drivers. If
successful then I should have plug n play kick in when I boot up in regular
mode, then I can update the drivers.

I'll let y'all know what comes of it.

Folks,

Even in SAFE MODE I can't remove the audio drivers, update the drivers, nor
get the audio advanced panel to come up.

It's as though the audio sound card is fighting to stay alive in my system.

Did you do any changes before you came upon this problem like install any new
software or delete any software? When you boot in safe mode, can you log in
as Owner or Administrator and have you checked to see if you can get to the
advanced audio properties?

Another thing, have you tried uninstalling your sound card then re-installing
it? You might need you Windows CD for that.

Just got off the phone with HP about this situation and they've informed me
that I need to do a Restore.

DAMN, damn, and double damn.

Well, sounds like you have nothing to lose by doing a System Restore
from a restore point that precedes the occurrence of the problem. Why
not try that first?
