I have an IBM Thinkpad r50e laptop, and have just bought a D-Link 300+ Adsl
Modem (with Ethernet Port - NOT USB)

When I first Connected the Modem (into my ethernet port via a straight
through cable) I was able to login to the config, by typing in a window
http://192.168.0.1/ (as this was the IP address) but I had to disconnect it.
ever since, I have not been able to connect to the device, as the IP Address
the system is allocating is http://169.129.171.41/ and I can Ping this IP but
not access it.

How do I change this? as the system automatically assigns this IP Address

I can't find anything called a "300+" on the D-Link web site. Is your
D-Link device an ADSL modem or an ADSL router? Those are different
types of devices. What is its complete model number? Examples of
current D-Link model numbers are DFL-300, DI-524, and DSL-302G.

An ADSL router has two IP addresses: a static local area network
address (such as 192.168.0.1), and an Internet address (probably
dynamic) assigned by your Internet Service Provider.

Where do you see the 169.129.171.41 address? What tells you that it
belongs to the ADSL device? That's not an address that I would expect
to see on the local area connection of an ADSL router.

What is your computer's IP address? To see, right-click the local
area network connection and click Status | Support. If that address
is 169.254.x.x, it means that your computer isn't detecting a
connection to the ADSL device.

Hi Thanks for the Info,

My Laptop detects that I have plugged the device into the ethernet port, but
allocates the 169.254 ip address, and I guess, that the laptop cannot see the
device. as it should, - could my Networking Settings be AWOL?

I am not experienced at all with Networking, as I am a Software Programmer.
but if i change the TCP/IP settings & manually config them, it tells me
192.168.0.1 is in use by another device? an Intel Wireless card, that I dont
have!

I see the 169.254.x.x IP Address in Connection Status.

i know this is wrong, is there anyway I can remove the so-called installed
IntelWireless Card from having an allocated IP Address? and restore default
Network LAN Settings?

I'm sorry, but I don't have enough information to diagnose the
problem.

What is its complete model number of your ADSL device? Examples of
current D-Link model numbers are DFL-300, DI-524, and DSL-302G.

What tells you that the 192.168.0.1 address belongs to an Intel
wireless card?

Click Start | Run, type "cmd" in the box, and click OK. Then type
this line at the command prompt:

ping 192.168.0.1

Does the command time out? Does it receive replies?

If your ADSL device is a router with a local area network IP address
of 192.168.0.1, assigning a static TCP/IP configuration to your
computer's network connection might solve the problem. Make all of
these settings:

IP Address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server: 192.168.0.1

Which one: DSL-504T, or DSL-G604T?

You are getting 169.254.171.41 because the Ethernet card isn't getting an
IP address assignment from the router.

My Laptop detects that I have plugged the device into the ethernet port, but
allocates the 169.254 ip address, and I guess, that the laptop cannot see the
device. as it should, - could my Networking Settings be AWOL?

In that property window where you see the 169.254.x.x IP address, can you
change it to 192.168.0.254? Change the setting from "Obtain an IP address
automatically" to "Specify an IP address. Enter 192.168.0.254 for the IP
address, and 255.255.255.0 for the Subnet Mask. Reboot, then try to access
192.168.0.1.

Double Checked ADSL Modem - i missed out the crucial bits!
D-Link ADSL MODEM DSL 300G+

will try and alter settings now
