Adobe Reader 8.1.0 doesn't load

Hey there.

I've recently come across a problem which I have not been able to
fix. The problem is, when I try to load Adobe Reader from the admin
account there is no change on the screen. When I look at processes in
task manager, I see that AcroRd32.exe is running, and hogging cpu, but
not loading.

The peculiar thing is when I log in on a guest account, Adobe loads
just fine.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the product many times, but
to no avail. I'm sensing a corrupt user profile, but I'm hoping
otherwise.

Thanks in advance.

Chris

in regards to acrobat, if you
are using the freeware version
you may be better off with out it
and should uninstall it and clean
your registry there after.

there are suitable replacements
that you can use which seem to
be more reliable, like:

primo pdf (to make pdf's)

and

foxit reader (to read pdf's)

Thanks for your reply, and I have heard of these other programs, but I
would really like to get adobe reader working properly.

Any other ideas, anyone else had this problem?

Not sure if this will help, but I came across this recently for a problem
where Acrobat 6 caused 100% CPU loading and would not load up the Reader.

Here is what it said:

Trying to launch Adobe Acrobat Reader it displays the splash screen and then
appears to do nothing. It will happily sit consuming vast amounts of CPU
until I kill the AcroRd32.Exe process using the windows task manager.

Cause:
It appears that Acrobat Reader likes to create temporary files in the
\Documents and Settings\<your_name>\Local Settings\Temp folder.

If something goes wrong it creates 65000+ files named Acrxxxx.tmp
(where xxxx ranges from 1 to FFFF ( = 65535 files))!!

Solution:
1.. Use Windows Task Manager to kill the AcroRd32.Exe process
2.. Open a command prompt
3.. cd \Documents and Settings\<your_name>\Local Settings\Temp
4.. Erase Acr*.tmp
You should now be able to launch Acrobat Reader.

end quote:

Not sure why it should work in one account and not another unless it went
beserk while in your account the first time and that is why it no longer
works now. The Guest account probably had no problems on initial usage.

Hope this helps

Martin
