Adobe Reader 7.0 required for XP SP-2?

G

Guest

I understand that, after April 11, the XP Service Pack 2 upgrade will be
included in the automatic update feature (if enabled).

Is it true that the upgrade requires Adobe Reader 7.0 in order to view PDF
docs? Earlier versions of Reader will no longer operate?

I need to confirm whether or not this is correct -- all workstations running
XP SP2 must upgrade to Reader 7.0 prior to installing SP2?

Thanks,
Karen

No. Service Pack 2 has nothing to do with Adobe Reader. There are
security issues with earlier versions of Adobe Reader and therefore it
is a good idea to have the latest version, but I have clients running
XP SP2 who need the older 6.0 Adobe Reader for compatibility issues and
that works just fine.

Version 5 works fine with sp2 - with fewer adverts in the toolbar too :)

Automatic Updates has offered WinXP SP2 since late August, 2004.

The Cumulative Security Update for IE scheduled to be released on 11 Apr-06
will include what has been an optional hotfix affecting ActiveX Controls
behaviour. See http://blogs.technet.com/msrc/archive/2006/03/29/423560.aspx

And far smaller and far faster too it seems, time startup and see :)

I installed 6, on a system with a true Postscript (tm) printer
and where 5 had worked fine for years. Somehow version 6 wouldn't
print, even though it knows the printer is there and that it is
Postscript (tm) printer. So I have to go fiddle with that,
or just put 5 back on there and hope it works again.

Absolutely nothing requires Adobe Reader of any version.

I use Foxit Reader for viewing .pdf files, I dumped Adobe Reader quite
awhile ago.

subject at hand
I understand that, after April 11, the XP Service Pack 2

If you have Auto Updates turned on, I'm surprised that Bill
the Gates didn't stick you with SP2 one night months ago. I
refused repeated attempts to upgrade on my older PC, but he
kept bugging me. Eventually he tired of the game and I still
run SP1. SP2 in on my newer PC. I had bought an SP1 retail
license just as SP2 was coming out and I truly regret ever
doing the SP2 upgrade. I cannot see anything tangible it is
doing for me. Whatever security it may be providing is so
transparent that I never know it is blocking or allowing
through, so I ass/u/me it just lets things through. But, boot
time went way up and access time to just open a folder tree
with NTFS more than doubled from SP1 to SP2 despite 8 times
more memory, more than double CPU speed and the fastest 260
gig SATA drive I could easily find.

But, at least SP2 is stable for me. But, then, SP1 has been
stable for almost 5 years...

I run Acrobat Readder 5.0 under SP2 with no problems. I had
/big/ problems with 7.0 so I uninstalled it and went back to
the old version. For the very limited PDF work I need/want,
5.0 is plenty.

much! 7.0 is in the best tradition of every new release
becoming a bigger bloatware.

Hear, hear. Foxit is great. And I think Cute PDF Writer (also freeware) is
the best free PDF creation software I've used, presuming one doesn't need
anything too fancy.

But try downloading or printing copies of your tax returns made using
TurboTax using Foxit Reader! <wink>
