I want to use the Repair option on the WinXP Pro CDROM (booted from CDROM)
to fix the a bad installation (the OS ran fine, but it the screen went black
with error message "driver_Irql_not_less_or_equal" if I left it on for 30min
or so) but I forgot the administrative password. Is there a way to retrieve
this password? Thank you

If you are using the Repair option in order to reinstall Windows over an existing installtion, then don't worry about the password.

During the installation you will be prompted for a new one.

On the subject of passwords: May I suggest that you use a familiar word: first name or surname, favourite place name or whatever you will use every day: then substitute numeric values .

e.g. LAS VEGAS becomes L45 V3G45 or simpler version LA5 VEGA5

This form of password is just as hard to 'crack' as the use of a pet name or car etc. But being a name you use everyday, it's less likely forgotten. Hell some perople even spell their surname backwards.
