Admin PW on Recovery Console

Hello all,
I have gone and done it this time. I crashed my machine
(please don't ask me to explain how...grrr) and I need to
run recovery console. Problem...I don't have passwords
on my computer but it keeps asking for an Admin
password. I found a regedit to cause it to not ask but
how can I do it if the computer will not boot into
Windows? So, I guess there is a two prong question
here. Is there a way to edit the registry without
Windows and is there an easier way to recover a computer
that I crashed while trying to run Service Pack /
patches? I'm am really desperate so any help is greatly
appreciated.

As a follow up, if I have another computer that I can
swap the HDD into is it possible to set the drive as a
slave, boot the machine using the good drive, and edit
the registry files on the crashed drive. I'm giving
myself a headache.
