address bar does not respond to enter or 'go'

After typing in an internet site that exsists and
pressing enter or clicking the 'go' button, absolutly
nothing happens other than the characters becoming
completly selected. THIS IS HIGHLY FRUSTRATING.....any
solutions.....anyone?
