address bar clean up

Gary W

I cannot clean up my address bar from autopopulating past
web sites. I have deleted all index.dat files, and used
the IE6.0 tools to clear autocomplete history, but this
does not work.

How do I clean out autocomplete history?

Thanks!

You tried R-Clicking the taskbar>properties>start menu programs tab>clear
documents? Works for me. ;-)

If that doesn't work, see here. Disclaimer: I have not used, nor have had a
use for these two .Inf files, but they have been recommended by
knowledgeable people for such cases.

Unable to delete AutoComplete entries
When you are unable to delete the AutoComplete entries after selecting:
Clear Forms Internet Options | Content [tab] | AutoComplete [button] | Clear
Forms [button]

Use the above method to delete the History folder as the AutoComplete
entries are actually stored in the hidden History\index.dat file. (also
applies to IE 6)

DelTypedURL [right-click and select: Save Target As]
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelTypedURL.inf
Removes the URL's from the Address Bar drop-down list without deleting the
Internet Explorer History. To use: right-click and select: Install
Note: this does not remove entries entered via AutoComplete.

I down loaded and installed the file and rebooted. I am
still seeing autocomplete entries in my address bar that
I viewed years ago.

What is next?

As I've said, I have not used either of those .Inf files, and haven't had
the need to. Why clearing documents doesn't empty that dropdown box is
beyond me. That process always has worked flawlessly here.

I'd do all the following, if I were you:
IE Options>Content tab>Autocomplete> clear all forms> remove the check from
all three boxes>apply>OK out. Then Advanced tab>Browsing>Un-check use inline
autocomplete for Windows Explorer and also for web addresses>Apply>OK out.

R-Click empty part of Taskbar>properties>start menu programs>documents
menu>clear>OK.

IE Options>clear History>yes>apply (if necessary)>OK out.

If that doesn't do it there is definitely something amiss.

Hi - You must be absolutely sure that ALL instances of IE are closed BEFORE
you use the .inf file(s). Otherwise the old URL's will just be re-written
to the Registry when IE is closed.
