Adding wireless to wired XP-Home Network

W

William Shat

I have three computers (all XP SP2) networked, using CAT 5 cable
(wired), to a Netgear wireless router. I want to add a wireless
computer (XP Home SP2) to this network. I want to share internet and
files and printers. The XP Network setup wizard only seems to handle
wired OR wireless connections and not a network using both. Q: Is there
a wizard for w/wless? Q: Are there any special considerations with this
setup?

The answer to both is "Not Really". Just get yourself a wireless access
point (or wireless router), enable WEP (64-bit is good, 128 bit is better),
and off you go. Please note that I have had problems with some of the low
end wireless cards and 64-bit WEP even though both the WAP and the adapter
supported 64-bit WEP.

All of your computers, wired and wireless, can access the Internet
through the wireless router.

I don't see anything in XP's Network Setup Wizard that distinguishes a
wired connection from a wireless connection. What do you see?

Run the Network Setup Wizard on the wireless computer. If it finds a
shared Internet connection, tell it to use that connection.
Otherwise, select the connection option "This computer connects to the
Internet through a residential gateway".
