adding volume control to taskbar

I have windows xp pro. I do not have volume control in my
bottom right taskbar. I would like it there.

When I try to add it per the directions to do so:

Open Sounds and Audio Devices in Control Panel.
On the Volume tab, under Device volume, select the Place
volume icon in the taskbar notification area check box.

I get an error message that says:

"windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar
because the volume control program has not been
installed. to install it, use 'add/remove' programs in
the control panel"

When I go to 'add/remove' programs, I do not see the
program to install. I don't know why it was not part of
my original install of XP Pro. Is there an easy way to
add/activate the volume control in my taskbar? What do I
do? I also notice that when I try to use the keyboard
function keys on my Dell laptop to change volume up or
down, they don't work. I can change volume in the control
panel by dragging the pointer back and forth.

thanks for any help.

Rich, rt click on MyComputer>Select Prop>Hardware>Device Manager. Click
Sound, Video and Game
Controllers and see if there are any yellow marks next to any of the
entries. If yes you have to reinstall the
Audio drivers. Also, go to Start>Run type: sfc /scannow with the
WinXP CD in the cdrom drive. That will
do a system file check and attempt to repair and replace any missing
system files.

This behavior can occur if the Sndvol32.exe file is damaged or missing. To
resolve this issue, extract a new copy of Sndvol32.exe from the Windows XP
compact disc to the system_root\System32 folder on your computer's hard
disk. For more information see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base
