Adding new hardware

I have an XP pro system and recently wanted to add a new printer. Following
the normal procedure with the wizard all looked OK except for an ominous
notice which said there had been a problem and my printer might not work. How
right it was. when I tried to print, nothing happened for several minutes:
then about 1 inch of text appeared and the system locked up. All existing
hardware still worked OK.To make a very simple test, I 'added' a new USB card
memory reader (the old one worked fine) Everthing appeared to work until I
put in an actual card. The system turned off the connection and the reader
disappeared from the hardware list. It seems that the installation software
is corrupting the data communication tranfer on any new hardware. Can I
reinstall the 'installation software'? Or is the problem somewhere else?

Disconnect all the USB devices. Then rt click MyComputer select
Properties>Hardware>Device Mananger>USB Controllers. Rt click each one and
choose Uninstall. Remove the Printer Software from Add/Remove Programs in
Control Panel. Restart and reinstall the Software and wait until it asks you
if the Printer is connected
