Adding hardware

When I access "Add New Hardware" under Control Panel I get
a message that says I am trying to perform Two Device
installations at the same time. Of course the situation
is that I am not trying to do this and thus I
am "screwed" when it comes to adding a new modem for
example. There seems to be a bogus installation that XP
is trying to perform here. Also the "add New Hardware
Wizard" is not available to me, neither does the new
Hardware detected "program" work. Plug and Paly is also
inoperative. I have tried to see under device managerif
there are hardware conflicts or problems - none.

Any suggestions out there to remove this "installation"

Sounds like you need to restore back to a date prior to
your 'Add New Hardware' fiasco. This will eliminate the
side conflict areas such as plug and play. Then start
over. Remove your old modem by deleting it out of the
Control Panel, phone & modems options, modems area. Power
down, disconnect old modem, connect new modem and turn the
computer on. It should detect the new one.
This should work if you did not change anything else
around that you have not mentioned.
