adding a new DC

R

robert

We have an old computer being used as a DC. Since we got a new system, i
have decided to add the new DC and remove the old machine.
1. I added the new system and promoted it to a DC, so its the second DC in
the domain.
2. Then i transfered the FMOS role's and setup the new DC as the GC
3. Stopped GC on the first one.

What i want to do is make the new DC the main controller, (i.e first DC) and
then remove the old DC.
So that if in the future i decide to add another DC, that would be the
second controller.

Is there anything else i need to do?

Thanx for any assistance

Robert,

I might not get rid of the old Domain Controller right now. I might wait
until you have another new server that you can promote to Domain Controller.
The reasoning behind this is that you currently have two domain controllers.
This is usually a very good thing. If you were to get rid of the original
domain controller you would have only one domain controller. This is
usually not a good thing ( read: not a best practice ).

What you can do is make sure that the second DC is a Global Catalog Server
( already done ), make sure that you are running DNS on it and that your
DHCP is updated so that this one shows up in the DHCP Options ( so that all
of your clients have the correct TCP/IP information ) and transfer all five
of the FSMO Roles to the second DC.

When you finally do get a new server and promote that one to Domain
Controller then you can get rid of the original ( as you would still have
two DCs at this point ).

HTH,

Cary
