Hello,

I would like to know the best procedure for migrating from an old
server (win2K3 std) to a new one (win2K3). From my understanding I do
the perform the following steps:

1.) Setup the new server, setup DNS, DCHP.
2.) Promote the machine to a DC.
3.) Promote the DC to a GC.
4.) Transfer the FSMO roles from old dc to new one.

My question is the new DC I am about to install I woudl like to have
the same name as the old one, but I can't name both the same now can I?
So can I change the name on the old DC to something different?

What do you think of my task list will it work?

Thanks guys,

You can rename the dc after the "migration".

Hi,
So can I change the name on the old DC to something different?

yes you can, but dont forget, your
Domainfunctionlevel must be "Windows Server 2003" to rename a DC.

Thank you for your help. My first task should be to change the name of
the DC I am about to replace correct?

Ok right ignore my previous question, when I demote the orginal DC I
will then rename it, and then I will rename my new DC my old DC's name,
how does that sound.

It`s ok, but after you demote your "old" DC,
check your DNS and WINS about the old DC name.
If you find entries, delete this before you rename your new DC.
