Adding a Network/ lost profile

Hi Any help on this would be so appreciated.
Got a home-network going on. 4 pcs all on a router with broadband.
Hubbie has a laptop which he uses at work on a network on a domain.
In order for him to use the internet at home he has to borrow our modem
which we have to disconnect which is a pain. So today we thought we'd add
him to our home network.
So I went through the process in System-Computer Name etc to change it from
a Domain to a Workgroup. It then said to confirm Administrator's ID and
password which we did and then the next step was to reboot.
When it started up, we couldn't get pass the Windows Log on let alone
anything else. It would not recognise his ID or password. But we got passed
that one by logging on to Administrator.
Windows opened but with none of his files and there's no way of getting to
his stuff. Not even showing in Users Accounts.
We know that once he gets back in the office he'll be able to log back onto
the domain and all but the question is this.
Why on earth would someone, on a LAPTOP which is pretty personal, want to
join another Network or Workgroup and not be able to access their whole
life??
What is the point of it all?? He could have just used my pc.
And if from forever he's been able to access his files even on a picnic
nowhere near his office, why can't he access them now?
Why is Windows dictating that he can't, eventhough he has all administration
rights??
I'd rather think I totally screwed up and someone out there can help,
pleeeeese.
Thanx
Jen

Re: removing a computer from a domain

Jen:

The files in his profile folder should still be on the hard disk. Open
Explorer, and look in the Documents and Settings folder.
You may have to take ownership, then setup NTFS perms before you can access
the folders/files. See Help and Support.
onto the domain and all ...

I would suggest that you have him discuss all of this with your network
administrator, as he/she will need to recreate a computer acct in the domain
for him.

Domain user accts do show as local user accts in CPanel: User Accts.

Thanx for your help.Found it all.
I could have sworn I had looked in Documents and Settings but obviously
missed it coz there they all were!! doh

The only problem now is that he can't get onto the internet at home. His
laptop is communicating with the others no problem but when he opens his IE
it says' page cannot be displayed' and he can't send email.
Any ideas?
Thanx again
Jen

PS BTW. He had no problem at the office logging onto the domain there.
And also going onto the internet.

Jen:

Possibly a DNS or default gateway addressing problem:
Run ipconfig /all on his computer and on one that can connect to the
Internet.
Then compare each line of the results.
