added new Maxtor card, now cannot boot

Dave Lopez

This is a new issue. Recently I was cramming more drives into my
computer, when I broke off the power port on one of my raids. So, I
bought a new Maxtor 200gb SATA drive, and a Maxtor SATA PCI card
(thinking that if I match the brand should have few problems)

Now I cannot boot up. I,ve tried going thru the boot up menus,
bios/cmos menus, and nothing. When I try to boot with the new card
in, the computer starts to go thru the usual. Then, when the windows
loading should go up it freezes. When I try boting with the C: going
thru the new card, it says that it cannot find boot record, then it
checks all drives, still nothing.

My system:

P4 2.0Aghz
Msi 845 Ultra Mainboard
ATI 8500 All-in-wonder DV
1Gb DDR
C:\ 40Gb West Dig (standard ata 133)
D:\ 15Gb west dig (standard ata 100)
E and F:\ TDK CD-r and BenQ DVD
G:\ Dual 80Gb West Dig (coupled RAID) (with freshly soldered power
cable on 1)
Unassinged 200Gb Maxtor SATA (SOB)
The Maxor PCI Card has 2 SATA ports (tried both) and 1 ATA 133 (2
drives on that)

I need help, without the card windows boots fine. But thats useless to
me of course.
Thanks for any help.

I take it you have IDE RAID onboard the msi 845.

This is a pci device, just like your maxtor card. The system will boot from
the one earliest in the PCI bus scan. If you can reverse this with a bios
option, do so. Otherwise try the maxtor in both the top an bottom slot. Try
deleting any partitions from the maxtor drive.

First thing to try--install the drivers for the new board without
installing the board, then install the board and see if the machine
comes up, if it does, then shut down and attach the new drive.

If this doesn't work, try the board in different slots and see if there
is one that it likes.
