Added 256 mb ram-Only showing 128 mb added

I am running XP home edition on an HP 520w which came with 256 mb ram. I installed another 256 mb module in the empty slot and now am showing only 384 mb of ram, instead of the 512 I was expecting. In boot mode it shows 256 mb ram in slot 1 and 128 mb in slot 2. I called the retail store where I purchased the module and was told that winXP uses the other 128 mb of ram to operate. I explained that I was showing 256mb of ram before the installation of the new module and he said it would be impossible, because XP should have used half of the 256mb that the system came with. Can anyone explain this more clearly or tell me if this is correct?

They are lying to you. The only memory that could be shared is video memory, But your total amount of memory would still be shown on statrtup. You need to find a new vendor.

They are feeding you a line of bull!

If the ram is identified in the boot up screen as 128 meg, that is what they
sold you. Take it back and insist that they give you what you paid for!

Greetings --

Whomever you talked to at that store either lied to you or knows
so little about computers that he/she should be working at McDonalds.
I strongly suggest that you do no more business there, once you've
returned the obviously defective or incompatible module that they sold
you.

It's absolutely essential that any new RAM module(s) be fully
compatible with both the motherboard and/or any other RAM module(s)
already in the system. Additionally, there are sometimes jumper
switches on older motherboards that need to be reset for new RAM
configurations. Consult your motherboard's manual or the
manufacturer's web site for specific instructions and compatibility
requirements.

If you cannot lay your hands upon the PC's manuals and the PC's
manufacturer doesn't provide a support web site, you can use these
utilities to help determine the correct type of RAM needed:

SiSoft's Sandra
http://www.sisoftware.co.uk/index.php?dir=&location=sware_dl&lang=en

Belarc Advisor
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Unlimited Possibilities' AIDA32
http://www.aida32.hu/aida-download.php?bit=32

Also, Crucial Memory's web site (www.crucial.com) has a database
to help to find the right RAM for your specific make and model PC.

Pure baloney!

Document every communication and tape every conversation with the shop. If
they refuse to replace it, warn them with a letter stating a possible legal
action for compensation for the cost of the merchandise, your legal cost and
your time and mental suffering. Don't touch the module yourself though. If
they do not relent, take it to a reputable repair shop, have that defective
module replaced, and send a duplicate of the repair bill to the first shop
demanding full reimbursement.

I would say it depends.

On my system (MSI K7N420 nVidia nForce), the video card is embedded on
the motherboard shares the system RAM. 32MB of system memory (RAM) is
dedicated to the graphics card.

For example, at bootup, the BIOS screen shows total system memory
512MB of RAM.

But, in Windows (control panel ; system ; general) it shows 480MB of
RAM.

So, I would say the person who started this thread needs to look at
the initial BIOS screen to see if the system is picking up the total
memory.

The other option is, the person needs to check their manual and
determine configuration options for the other RAM slot.

To verify the the real problem switch the modules in and out and record the
MB size that is listed. Jym
