One common cause of this problem is that the XP member
of the AD domain is not configured to use _only_ the DNS
servers that support the AD. This is in the Tcp/Ip config
of the XP client.

No others, not first in list, not second, not last.
If you loose some DNS functionality when using only
the correct DNS servers, then those DNS servers are
not correctly configured.
