Add to Favorites missing

A few users at a client site report that the Add to Favorites command is
missing (not dimmed...missing) from their Favorites menu. Eventually (a few
hours to a few days), it comes back, but disappears again later.

Machines are Windows 2000 SP4 and Windows XP SP1 with IE 6 SP1. All have
current virus scanners (plus the limited spyware scanner in Symantec AV
Corporate 9.0) and are clean. No known GPOs are set that involve
Favorites...I don't think this behavior is even settable by GPO.

On some machines the command disappears simultaneously from IE & Explorer.
On others, it disappears only in Explorer.

Ideas?

Try the following and see if it helps:

Favorite Button not Available:

Copy the contents below to a Notepad, and save as "Fav.reg" within
quotes. Then, double-click the file.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Restrictions]
"NoFavorites"=dword:00000000

Tools - Internet Options - Programs - Reset Web Settings

This is most likely due to corrupt InternetShortcut or http file
association. "Reset Web Settings" fixes this symptom. Another option is to
run the command "regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll" from Start/Run dialog.

Open Registry Editor and navigate to this location:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders]
In the right-pane, double-click "Favorites" and copy the value and post it
here.

The correct value should be: "%USERPROFILE%\Favorites"

or........................

Use FolderRedirector utility and reset the shell folder paths for Favorites
to the default values (both user shell folders and shell folders registry
keys)
