Missing favorites, unable to add.

Hi, I have XP,IE 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2. and updated to SP1. My favorite links
have disappeard. I am unable to add and when I create a new folder within
'organize favorites' I get error: 339, unspecified error. I have looked into
resistry and Shells all point to right paths. I have scan my PC with all
kinds of malware, ex: Adware, Spybot, Hijack etc...I have booted in Safe mode
and see the myFavorites folder under %userprofile% and copied it on my
desktop. Next, I tried to 'cut&paste' into %usersprofile% in safe/normal mode
(tried both) and get: 'this folder already contains a folder named
'Favorites' (I do not see this folder even when I have 'show hidden files and
folders' selected for view in 'folders option') Prompts me if is still want
to move/copy and I select 'YesToAll'. I get error about cannot move links
'cuz file name already exists & to specify a diffrent file name.
Can anyone HELP! (Keep in mind that I have already tried to delete
'myFavorites' in safe/normal mode but not allowing me to).
How can I get myFavorites to work again(add to.../organize favorites?)

Sorry for not making myself clear. The issue is with 'favorites'. My links
are all gone in 'favorites' IE 6 (might have deleted some file). I am unable
to add new links within IE browser, nothing happens when clicking on 'add to
favorites....' When I click on 'organize favorites...'>create folder I get
error: 339 Also I do not see 'favorites' folder in my user profile(It should
be there). I have not found any malware fore I have scanned with diffrent
apps. Can you tell me what the error is and how to get rid of this also how
to make 'favorites' function properly (like normal) thanks.

Hi Ramesh, thnx for the reply.
I don't get a 'red x' mark in organize favorites. I see an empty box. I just
get the error: 339, unspecified error. I am unble to add any links. Is there
a way to refresh/reinstall IE 6. Can you help?

Hi C.K,

Where is the Favorites User Shell Folders value pointing to?

Type REGEDIT in Start/Run. Navigate to:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

In the right-pane, note down the value for "Favorites" and also it's type
(Should be a REG_EXPAND_SZ value). Post the info here. BTW, you can launch
the Favorites folder in your profile by typing this in Start/Run:

%userprofile%\favorites

Hi Ramesh, thanks for replying. When I type %userprofile%\favorites in

Sorry, forgot to mentions that I have verified the regedit before and all

After completing all of your steps, I still get the same error. Do you think
uninstalling/reinstalling IE might fix this. Any suggestions?

Hi Costa,

Looks like a tough one. Are you able to access the Favorites folder in your
user profile?

C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Favorites

If so, create a new Favorites folder in a different path/drive and copy the
files from the old folder to the new. Then change the "User Shell Folders"
favorites value in the registry to reflect the new path. Open IE and try
creating a folder using "Organize favorites"

Thank you for your patience on this. To answer to your question, There is no
Favorites folder %userprofile%\favorites (I have already mentioned that).
And when I try to cut and past saved Favorite folder with links (retrieved
Missing Favorites folder while in safe mode and copied to desktop), In
%userprofile%\favorites I get message that folder already exists 'do you
wana replace' I click on "YES to ALL" then get another moving error 'unable
to move links already exist'. I tried your steps below, changed the value in
user shell folder within the regedit. This has worked, and can now see
favorites in IE fine, however still the issue remains within windows explore
favorites (probably because dosen't reflect to new path). Can you advise on
how to recreate default Favorites folder so that everything works like when
first installing XP OS?

I don't know if this applies but I read this in a post on another
newsgroup..

Q:
How do I resolve error 339?

A:
Error 339 should only occur in Windows XP, 2000, and NT. Logging
into
your computer with a "limited access" user profile causes error 339,
meaning
that you do not have full administrative access to the operating
system. The
current fix is to log on as administrator within your operating
system. This
will allow full file sharing within your operating system and should
resolve
error 339.

It would seem that the Favorites folder is in that directory and that you
just cannot see the folder there. How about creating a folder called
Favorties2 or some such, and then going to a command window and deleting the
super-hidden folder from there using the del or deltree command? Then
rename your Favorites2 folder to Favorites. Ricky has a good point, too.

In any event, if you go to Start...Run...type in "cmd" (no quotes) you
should end up in:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\

Type in "dir" (no quotes), hit Enter

Do you see a Favorites directory there? Example:

C:\Documents and Settings\Jon Kennedy>dir
Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is 3C48-B219
