add/remove Windows components

I want to add all Games available ( solitaire, pinball, etc) and Accessories
(calculator, character map, clipboard viewer, desktop wallpaper, docu
templates, mouse pointers and paint) to my XP- I had them installed recently
but mistakenly removed them from the components sidebar in control panel. I
did the steps in KB 307894 to reinstall them but when I'm prompted to install
my XP SP2 disk I do and click OK and in the bottom of the box for what files
to find them in is D:/I386, but when I click OK again to proceed nothing
happens. I tried using Browse to search for the files I need to install but
can't seem to find them. My DVD-ROm player is D:/
My research says these files I need are in the XP installation files but I
haven't a clue where to find them? Thanks for help with this!

i think that if you
insert the windows cd
and run it via the file manager/desktop
you will see some options...

In which drive are you putting your CD? You may need to insert your
original CD and not the SP2 update.

Search the CD for the folder; it could be a sub-folder and you may need
to change the path from D:\I386 to the correct folder. Sometimes the
folder is also available on the hd., in C:\windows\i386. Please notice
the correct syntax requires a backslash, not a slash.

Gerry, my CD-DVD drive is D. The hard drive is C. I have tried both the
original XP CD and also the SP2 one. Once either was loaded I couldn't
figure out where to look for these game and accessory files. ????

When I insert my original CD it autoruns and loads a Welcome Screen. You
select Install Optional Windows Components and make your choice.

Joe, yeah I messed up on the syntax thanks. I've searched both CDs - but for
what folder exactly I don't know! Thats' where I'm stuck- what folder am I
looking for that holds these particular Game & Accessory files? I tried
searching RUN: C:\windows\i386 but it said it couldn't find it. Like I said
earlier- each time the Windows components wizard with either CD inserted puts
up the "Files Needed" window and says to insert the SP2 disk, click OK and at
the bottom of the window it says Copy files from: D:\1386. When I click
Next nothing happens. I can click Other to look for other locations but
since I don't know what the heck I'm really searching for I'm against a brick
wall. Frustrating! -Bob

Gerry, yes I get the autorun & Welcome screen & I selected install optional
windows components but I just get the same thing happening again- the windows
component wizard pops up as before, I select what I want to add from the menu
& submenus, click OK and the Files Needed window pops up as before wanting
the SP2 dick inserted etc etc etc.

Click Start, Search, All Files and Folders, type i386 in the "All or
part of the filename" pane. Change "Look in:" to your CD and click
Search. But you may have to change Folder Options to show hidden files
and folders before you can see the folder. Try this search on both CDs
and the C: drive. Mark down the path to the folder and insert it when
prompted.

Okay problem solved, don't ask me what exactly I did to do it but I just ran
through the same steps for the millionth time that MS suggests for
adding/removing components and I finally got it to work. I used my XP
installation disk , which hadn't worked before but it did this time. Maybe I
misread the wizard when it asked for the XP SP2 disk and I had tried it too
but at this point no matter.
I didn't have to change the D:\i386 path in 'copy files from:' either. FWIW
I have all my files unhidden before I even started this process.
Anyway, maybe somehow I had the checkboxes for the components I wanted to
install in the wizard wrong- who knows. Usually its the simple stuff that you
overlook while looking elsewhere! Grrrrrrr. Thanks all for your help. -Bob
