can I copy the games I deleted from another pc?

Dear All,


I deleted the games that came loaded on my pc, Spider Sol, Solitaire,
Minesweeper etc. They are truly gone as they don't appear in the
Windows/System 32 folder. I've looked in the folder, seached all exe files,
they are gone.

Can I copy them off another pc using a thumbdrive, then drag them to the
correct folder in my pc and double click them or try to re-install them by
doing the Add/Remove-Windows Components routine?

I believe the method referenced in the link works when the games files are
still in the PC. My files are gone. I cannot "re-link" them as they are no
longer available.

i will give it another shot, just in case I;m missing a step.

Yes the first step provides the source files.

1.With the Windows XP CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive, click Start, and then
click Control Panel.

Copying would get the files but I cant say that they will work as
advertised as the registry entries aren't created. Try getting a copy of
an XP CD from a friend.

Sounds like you have a recovery partition, if so then in order to get the
missing games just go to My Computer> Add/Remove programmes>Add/Remove
Windows components>choose Accessories & Utilities>click on the Details
button> double click on Games & choose the missing games from the list then
choose OK to reinstall.

Try Control Panel, Add Remove Programs, Windows Components, Accessories &
Utilities, Games anyway. If it barfs because you don't have a CD, just copy
the games from the other computer and stick them in a folder on the new one.
Make your own shortcuts to them for the Start/Programs menu if you want
them.

Ensure that you have hidden files/folders enabled, start Windows Explorer
and navigate to C:\Windows and see if you have an I386 folder there. If so
you should be able to run the Windows features setup in Control Panel,
Add/Remove Programs. If it asks for the installation CD point the browser to
that folder. The I396 folder normally stores the setup files used to install
Windows XP. If not there and you don't have access to a disk looks like you
may have to borrow one.

If you tried "Control Panel", "Add/Remove Programs" and were prompted
for your Windows CD, see if you have a "C:\I386" folder. If so, browse
to it when prompted.

should find the files, expand, rename and copy them and create shortcuts to
them in the Start Menu.

The default location is "C:\Windows\System32". You'll have to create the
shortcuts manually.

Yes they have, I did on 3/15. To repeat, just copy them; however, you don't
copy them to a file (as you stated above) because an exe is *already* a fie.
Copy them to a folder; any folder but a logical one would be one you make
with a name something like "Game exe files I copied form another computer".

I don't do this for a living but...

The others said nothing, but depending when you deleted them and how
many things you have deleted since then, I think you should look in
the Recycle Bin. If you haven't deleted too much since you deleted
them, they should still be there.

Also, what ever happened to UnDelete. If the items were not sent to
the recycle bin, but few items were copied to the Games sub-folder
since then, might he not be able to Undelete them, using a Norton
utility, or even a MS utility?

Finally, yes, you can get the .exe file from another computer. If you
just deleted the games and didn't uninstall them, any registry entries
should still be there, and as long as you put the .exe files back in
the same folder they were originally, everything will work. And does
Solitaire, for example, really use the registry? Maybe to keep track
of what design the cards are, but surely there is a default.

If there are still shortcuts pointing to the games, including in the
Programs list, they will work too, if you put the files back in the
original folder. Just pay attention if you get a warning when
copying that there already is a file by the same name in the same
location. You say you looked and there isn't, but this is one more
check.

Dear Al,

Many thanks for all the posts. I was able to re-insatll the missing games. I
guess they were there all the time. I did multiple searches, using *.exe,
spider, with no results. I then went to the i386 folder and saw spider.e_,
spider.ch_ and spider.hl_.

I then went back to Add/Remove..... and tried different combinations of
checked and unchecked boxes and voila, it worked. The other day when I tried
that, I removed some of the aux. apps., like the calculator etc.

My fear was that I would delted more applications etc and really be screwed.
The default setting on most of these components is : checked. I was worried
that by hitting next with everything checked, I would delete more as stated
above.

Again, I appreciate everyone's input.
