Add/Remove Program List Appears Corrupted

I went into my Add/Remove programs today to remove some programs
related to my video card. They weren't there. And about half of the
ones listed don't have a change/remove icon. Also, I used to have a
huge list of Windows XP Hot fixes. Now there are only four.
Something seems to have corrupted the list. Is there any way to
recover from this?
 
Can you use System Restore to restore to a previous point. These items are
stored in the registry.
 
My problem is that it could have occurred weeks or months ago. I
wouldn't know where to begin. I also wouldn't know all the updates,
etc. that I would lose in the process, and have to reinstall.
