ADD or Remove corrupted

G

geoffatmhg

I am using XP Home with SP2 install at source. I tried to open Add or Remove
this morning and got following message

An exception occured while trying to run C:\windows\system32\shell 32 dll,
control_rundll "C;\windows\system32\appwiz," Add or Remove Program

I have tried run -- sfc /scannow but get a message requesting XP Pro with
SP2 Cd. I am running Home Edition and it wont recognise my legit CD when I
put it in CD player

Any ideas would be appreciated.

TIA

Geoff

Hi,

1) To solve the immediate problem, just extract the needed file. Start/run
msconfig, click on "expand file" (general tab)

File to expand: appwiz.cpl
From: X:\I386
To: C:\Windows\system32

Where X is whatever letter is assigned your CD drive (you need your WinXP CD
for this), change it accordingly. If your system was preinstalled, you may
find this instead on the hard drive under C:\Windows\I386. If so, change the
"from" line accordingly. This assumes a default installation to C:\Windows.
If your installation is in a different folder, such as C:\Winnt, change the
"To" path accordingly. Reboot when finished.

2) You need to change the sourcepath string in the registry to match the
location of the I386 folder on your system, this is common in preinstalled
systems. Usually it is found under C:\Windows. Click start/run and type
regedit, then click ok. Expand the branches by clicking the plus (+) signs
to reach this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

Double-click the sourcepath string in the right pane, change the path to
match the parent folder of the I386 folder on the system (Usually
C:\Windows). Then click ok and close the registry editor. This should allow
the sfc function to run correctly.
