Ad-Aware and Spybot both freeze up

Trying to get Ad-Aware SE to run updates on a WIndows XP Home PC that I
am about done cleaning up. (It was full of all kinds of issues) But
anytime I click UPDATE to get the def update, it freezes. I manually
downloaded them, and was able to get a good scan. So I deleted
everything it found, but it still will not AUTOMATICALLY update.
Freezes everytime. The other part of this issue is that Spybot Search
and Destroy does the same thing. Freezes anytime I try to update.
After it freezes I get a pop-up that says ccApp has an error, then that
messages also freezes. The only way out of this mess it to push the
power button in and down the system. It won't even let me shut down
softly or end task on any of the apps. What could be causing this?
Anyone have any idea's?

Hi Theresa,
Try to uninstall and reinstall your Anti-Adware,it seemes to me your
Ad-Aware SE Definitions been corrupted by whichever infected your System,do
you have AV installed,if n't try AVG free anti-virus to protect you from
viruses.

Run anti-virus and anti-spyware programmes in safe mode.

If scans detect a virus or trojan turn System Restore on and off.
