activex mess, nothing works that uses it

I think I may have deleted something I need to use activex controls. I don't
know that much at all about technical stuff, so if you want to help me,
please use simple words. I was on the phone with a microsoft rep for 2 1/2
hrs yesterday and couldn't fix it. We disabled firewalls, started in safe
mode, ran scannow, etc. I reinstalled sp2. Nothing worked. I do get the
yellow bar under my toolbar which says i need to click to install activex
control, and then i'll get a box to install. When I click install, nothing
happens at all. I also get parts of pages here and there while browsing which
cannot be displayed. The rep made me remove all objects in "view objects"
under internet options. The activex controls did work at one time a few
months ago. This makes me think I deleted something important-registry keys
or something like that. I tried to use system restore, but it would only go
back to May 6. I don't know what happened to earlier restore points. They
disappeared.Now all of those files are listed as damaged. I want to throw
this computer out the window. Please help if you can.
