ActiveX controls stopped working in IE6

Hello,
*All* ActiveX controls have stopped working in IE6. I have not changed the
security options that would cause them not to run.

Among other things, this means that I can't run Windows Update!

Any advice on how to troubleshoot this?

Thanks,
Bill

Hi, I have the same problem. I get :

"Please change your Internet Explorer security settings
To save changes to your settings for this website, you need to enable
userdata persistence for Internet Explorer. Complete the steps below, and
then click Change settings to the left and try saving your changes again.
In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
Click the Security tab, click the Internet security zone icon, and then
click Custom Level.
In the Settings dialog box, scroll to the Miscellaneous section.
Under Userdata persistence , select Enable.
Click OK and when the security warning dialog box appears, click Yes.

Read more about steps you can take to resolve this problem yourself."
I have tried this several times, to no avail. I even removed IE6 and
re-installed, but still same message. VERY frustrating, as I can't receive
updates either.

KB896688..........another Microsoft Update Lemon. Best advice...........get
rid of it via add remove programs. You could try the registry fix but it
doesn't always work. Check out KB896688 on the Microsoft support page.
Otherwise, I suggest that Microsoft remove this boondoggle from the site
until they get it right......for all supported operating systems.

Windows version? Is KB896688 found in Add/Remove Programs?

Despite Marcus' disgruntled grousing...

See:

YW, Bill, and thanks for posting back. We hope that MS will address this
bug (which only affects a small minority of users) in the next IE Cumulative
Patch.
