ActiveX and Javascript acting differently than Security settings

Hello all,

All of my 4 default security zones are set to the defaults. I then try to
access any web page that uses ActiveX or Javascript and I am not allowed to
run those scripts. I can't run Windows Updates, even if the correct url's
are in my trusted zone. I can't run most (all of the ones that I tried)
online virus scanners because they all use ActiveX.

I recently ran Ad-Aware and Spybot and cleaned out bunches of CoolWebSearch
entries. I ran HiJackThis and deleted only items that were labelled as
Malware. Those items I researched on the web to make sure that I wasn't
removing anything that might be needed. After all this cleaning, I have
notices that Windows Explorer doesn't crash anylonger and browsing for the
most part is more predictable. It is just that I can't get past this ActiveX
thing. No matter what I change the settings to, I get the same results.
When I do a "Help->About", I don't see what version of IE that I have. The
HJT log tells me that I am running IE6.0 SP1.

Is there some registry setting that might be set somewhere? Can I reinstall
IE? Will upgrading to SP2 fix this? I am at the point where I am seriously
considering reformatting the disk and re-installing the OS.

Thanks very much.

Jan,

Can I also just remove and then add IE? Will something like that possibly
help me out, assuming that I can download IE on another PC and bring it over
via network or flash memory?

Hi bpiela :-)

No....IE *cannot* be uninstalled from XP, as it is a core part of the
program and serious damage to your OS will occur if any of it's files are
deleted. However, it is possible to repair IE in XP, and this is possibly
an option. Here are the instructions for doing a repair of IE in XP if you
decided to do that.

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP

If you want to install XP2, I strongly urge you to make sure that your
machine is fully clean, and as problem free as possible. Thus, try to
resolve the current problems before installing SP2, as there are issues that
can result from installing SP2 itself. Best to start on an even playing
field before moving to the next level. :-)

Hope this helps

I have this prob too, IE will not run pages where I need to log in. I have
Norton Internet Security & Antivirus installed and these are disabled for
some reason and I cant enable them. I have asked around newsgroups but with
no look.

Last night I checked it out again on the Symantec website and it looks like
it is due to there softeware, this is the answer I found, it may be of use
to someone else:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...nDocument&prod=&ver=&tpre=eu&src=eu_sg&csm=no

Error: "You do not have the necessary rights to configure the item you have
double-clicked" with Norton AntiSpam 2005 and Norton Internet Security 2003
Situation:
If you install Norton AntiSpam 2005, and then install Norton Internet
Security or Norton Internet Security Professional 2003, when you open Norton
Internet Security, the main interface shows "Off" status. If you click
Personal Firewall, Intrusion Detection, Privacy Control, Ad Blocking or
Norton AntiSpam, the error message "You do not have the necessary rights to
configure the item you have double clicked" appears. If you have Norton
Internet Security Professional installed, the system tray icon displays a
"Disabled" status. When you right-click it, the "Enable" option is not
displayed in the right-click menu.

Solution:
This problem has been reported to Symantec Technical Support. At this time,
we do not know the exact cause or contributing factors to this problem. We
will update this document when new information or a solution is available.

Thank you very much for posting the information. It is possible that this is
the problem that the OP is having. Hopefully, they will read this reply and
if they have Norton AS 2005 they will disable or uninstall it.
