Active sync/Outlook

Do I really have to have Office Outlook downloaded to use Active synce to
back up my files from my smart phone? Or is Outlook Express the same thing?
Somehow my contact list has found it's way onto Outlook Express with out me
doing anything that I know of.
The tech people at the phone company say Outllook Express is nothing and I
have to have Office Outlook downloaded.

Version of Windows? Active sync doesn't work with Outlook Express but if
you use Vista, the sync center should work with Vista's Mail.

You don't need ActiveSync to backup, but it depends on what type of backup you
wish to make. Some versions of Windows Mobile come with a built-in backup
command that allows you to make a copy of the WM contents to an SD card or
other add-on storage. Connecting the device to Windows should give you a
"Mobile Device" icon in My Computer and you can use Windows Explorer to
drag-and-drop the contents fo storage on your PC. The first format will allow
you to restore the backup from the add-in storage and the second will allow
you to restore individual files, but it's not usable in restoring all of the
device settings. Neither format will allow the data to be used from a PC.

With ActiveSync installed, you don't need to sync with any PC-based
application, but it will allow you to make a device backup to a folder on your
PC that can be used to restore the device in its entirety. The data would not
be usable on the PC, but it will keep your mobile device safe in case of
failure and you must perform a hard reset.
