Active Partition

I am using Windows XP with SP2.

As my present HDD is of only 40GB I bought one 80GB HDD along with
external case to use it as external HDD through USB Port.

While trying to format the external HDD I have accidently made my first
partition Actve.

Now how can I correct the problem?

Further as I am using an internal HDD as an external one, how should I
set up my drive - Master or Slave ?

Your advice in this regard will be of great help to me.

Thanks.

It would only be necessary to do this if youwere planning on making the
external drive bootable. The easiest way would be to delete the partition
and then create anew one but don't make it active. If you have already put
data on it, you would need to copy it elsewhere first.

There would probably be no harm in leaving the partition active if you do
not select it as bootable in your BIOS, though you may have problems with
the system not booting if the drive is connected at boot time. Just
disconnect it, boot and then connect it once windows is booting up.

According to the instructions of the external box. They normally require
the disk to be set as Master, but some prefer Cable Select. Some don't seem
to care either way.

Either way, its set as master. Only drive on an ide cable, and the ide
cable has one connection (at the end), it will be master setting cable
select. For the non-braindead using a WD hard drive, try master alone (no
slave). 3 ways to do this. No jumper, jumper 3 and 5, or jumper 4 and 6.
The latter 2 are storage positions for the jumper, has no effect.
