Active Directory Challenged

First off, I’m not a Network admin or DNS guru, so forgive me if I screw up the terminology

I’ve got two servers: SAIC-DEV and D102607. The first one was set up as a DC for SAICLA.LAN. I then used dcpromo on D102607 so it could be the backup for SAIC-DEV

I noticed now, when I try to ping the FQDN of D102607, I get an error. When I ping SAICLA.LAN (my domain), I get the IP address for D102607. OK, so I screwed up naming the computer when I joined it to the domain (I think). If I try a DCPromo to demote D102607 so that I can fix the name stuff, I get the following error

The operation failed because

The Directory Service failed to replicate off changes made locally

“The DSA operation is unable to proceed because of a DNS lookup failure.â€

Please help me fix this so I can get back to my real job (wish they would pay for a network admin around here!)

The most common reason for this type of problems is DNS configuration on
your system. You must understand, that your servers and clients must point
their DNS settings to the internal DNS server that is responsible for AD
domain. Secondly you must check, that you have all records registered in DNS
server . You can check this against netlogon.dns file in
%systemroot%\system32\config folder. Last thing to check on your servers
would be primary DNS suffix, which should match your domain name. You check
this in Control Panel-->System-->Computer Name Tab-->Change butting-->more
button.

Thanks for the help, that did the trick! I think my AD setup is working correctly again!!! NetDiag and DCDiag do not report any problems on either of the DCs!
