I purchased a PC from a dealer that had Win Xp SP2 Pro installed on it!
It has the Id number for it, and supposedly the Activation number-I was
given!
Though when I try doing Window updates, and it goes through the process of
checking, it comes back as not a genuine Microsoft Product!
Does anyone know how I can insert the activation code without reinstalling?

i think you mean the product key, since activation is done in the background
and cannot be
addressed by a user, unless you it is provided to you manually.

You can get your internal product key by using a program called BeLarc from
the net. Then you can use something like magicjellybean as well. I think
Microsoft has several articles that also address this particular issue you
are having.. It will be good for you to check to see if the internal product
key matches the one you think you have.

If you product id is legit, activation will be of no problem. Your computer
can do it via the net or you simply call MSIndia via the provided 1800,
provide them the info and they will provide an activation code to key in..

The Windows XP Pro SP2 from a dealer is bulk OEM product. You get
support from the Manufacturer / Dealer, not Microsoft.

When you first turn on a Genuine Microsoft Supported operating system,
from a good reseller, the System asks for the Product Key to be entered.
Once Entered, you then register and activated Windows usually at the same
time. The Activation Code is inserted by Microsoft or thru a manual screen
when activating over a telephone call to Microsoft.
