Went to try to activate my computer and I get a message saying that the
amount of times I can activate have been exceeded. What do I do? I had to
reinstall XP because when I set up the dual-boot with Windows Vista Beta 2,
the Vista boot manager got stuck on the partition with XP and would refuse
to delete. I could not get Vista to install because of that. Thanks.

Call the telephone number provided at that activation screen.

That's a misleading message and isn't really true. You can activate as
oiften as you need to.

All that's necessary in your case is to take the option to activate by
telephone. You should have been given an 800 number to call. Just do
so--it's normally quick and easy.

Which brings up the question as to why a hotfix hasn't been provided,
being as they've known about this bug for a long time. Could it be that
MS hopes people will rush out to buy a copy of XP they don't need so
they can make two billion a month instead of one? Or were the
programmers too busy writing new versions of WGA to be bothered?

The error message you received is misleading. What it really means
is that you've activated "via the Internet too many times within the
last 120 days." I think Microsoft should fix this message, but it is,
in reality, a relatively minor "cosmetic" issue, so they're probably
giving more weight to some silly cost-benefit analysis more than they
are their customers' confusion.

There's no limit to the number of times you can reinstall and
activate the same WinXP license on the same PC. Nor is there ever a
charge. Nor does a Product Key (so long as it's not an evaluation
license) ever expire. If it's been more than 120 days since you last
activated that specific Product Key, you'll most likely be able to
activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less, you might
have to make a 5 minute phone call.
