Activation frustration

I have had this problem before and it is really starting to irritate me.
For some reason, whether it be to change a hard drive, NIC, software or some
other item, Windows XP tells me that it is having a problem with the
activation code.

This latest time it was on a W2K computer that I just upgraded, installed
all the Service Packs, Office, and about 10 other apps. After I have just
about completed everything I get the activation code error which prevents me
from logging on. Microsofts's solution is to do an in place upgrade, which
of course will cause me to have to put back on the SPs, Windows Updates,
driver updates, etc.

There has got to be a way I can connect to this computer remotely and change
a setting in the Registry that tell the computer to start the activation
process and not just deny access to the computer. Does anyone know of the
key to do this?

Something not right. W2K doesn't have 'activation'.

For the computer you're having trouble with, are you not able to logon/boot?

It's called don't buy products that comes with a lock, but you don't get
a key to open that lock.

Would you buy a house from someone on the condition that they will hold
on to the key, and will only open up your door at their convenience?

I upgraded the Windows 2000 computer to Windows XP and then got the error
after installing SP1 and other updates. The W2K ugrade to XP and all the
patches took 3.5 hours so you can see why I don't want to get all the way to
the end and get this activation error especially since I activated right
after the upgrade only an hour or two before.
